** Hey there, Rachel! (Waves!)**

What (or who) got you into book blogging?
Well I remember a while back, I was looking at a load of other book blogs. I sat there and thought "Wow, if only I could make my own. . ." Then I realised - I could! Thus, Booked Up! was born. So I guess it was the many other book bloggers that helped me decide to make my own.

What sort of genres do you enjoy reading more?
I'm always open to new genres, but I mainly stick to Chick Lit, YA adventures and fantasy. One rule for me though: Never. Touch. A. Horror.

If you only could only have the books of three authors, who would they be and why?
Wow, that's one tough question. There are just so many to choose from! First I would have to have Jacqueline Wilson. I don't really read much from her anymore, but her books were my whole childhood. She probably got me so interested in reading in the first place, when I was a lot younger. Everyone should get to experience the Jackie Wilson faze! Secondly, Cathy Cassidy. Her books were and still are perfect for teenage girls. I find myself constantly daydreaming about swapping lives with the girls in her novels. For the third author, I can't choose between Sophia Bennett and Lauren St. John. Sophia because she introduced me to a world I never knew existed (the fashion world!) , and Lauren St. John because of her wonderful books involving wild animals from Africa, which I love reading about.

Which character would you happily be best friends with?
Several years ago, I would have said Tracy Beaker. But now, I think it would be Edie from the Threads Trilogy. Edie is just so caring and supportive, and I've never had a friend quite like her. In the Trilogy, she is forever trying to save the world, and I would happily join her.

Do you have any similar traits to any fictional character yourself?
Hmm, I now realise why I would choose Edie to be my best friend, as I think I'm a tiny bit similar to her. I also love trying to Save The World, and care about making sure my friends are always OK. If they have a problem, like Edie, I try and make it my own to fix. Which can be stressful! I know I'm not, but I would like to be sassy and confident like Sabine from the Soul Screamers Series. However, I know I'm actually very self-conscious like Georgia from the Georgia Nicolson Series.

If you could disappear into any book, which one would it be?
I think it would very fun to be able to visit The Secret Garden. I'm not into many classics, but that one is an exeption. It just all sounds so beautiful, and to hide away in there for a while would be my version of heaven!

Quick Fire Questions:

Printed or Ebook? Paperback, paperback, paperback. I still can't get my head around why anybody likes Ebooks. To me, it's just not the same at all. No new book smell (sorry, but I am that sad!), no feel of the pages between your hands, and you can't display it proudly on a real bookshelf.

Dystopian or Contemporary? I think Contemporary - it appeals to me a lot more.

Faeries or Mermaids? I've never been too keen on either, but can Sirens count as a type of Mermaid? If so, Mermaids!

Cathy Cassidy or Chris Higgins? Sorry Chris, but Cathy all the way. I do love her too, though, and you'll find them both filling my bookshelves.

Harback or Paperback? Paperback again. The reason for this is probably because I can fit more of them on my bookshelves than Hardbacks.

World Book Day

Yup, the day is here! The day where we celebrate the amazing world of the written word - and, of course, the authors behind it all! Oh, where would all we readers be without books? Where would we be if we couldn't disappear into another world to escape reality? Well I know my answer!

Interview with Author Cale Dietrich

Well today I am happy to introduce you to a new author out on the block, Cale Dietrich! His first book, Institution is pictured right. You can buy this book for the Kindle here. Without further-a-do, on with the interview!

Can you tell us a little about your book?
Institution is the first story in a big, epic series that documents the Third World War, which is the battle between humans and "demons", a broad category that includes people with superpowers and many mythical creatures such as werewolves, nature spirits and Valkyrie.

At the centre of this brewing conflict are two siblings, Amber and Darren, who, at the beginning of the story are ordinary teenagers. Darren is in his final year of high school, and he is in a constant state of worry about the future. Amber is a university dropout, and she is wasting her life by working in a dead end job all day and partying all night. Throughout the story, these two normal kids become extraordinary, and their actions are what cause The Third World War to erupt.

Do you feel you vary from the average author?
I feel I vary from (some) authors because I honestly write these stories because I love to write them. I know that a lot of people write YA because they think it's easier than adult fiction (they're crazy) but I write YA because it's what I love to read and writing these stories is my favourite thing to do. Additionally, I think my age is an advantage. I am still a teenager (I'm 19) so the memories of those years are fresh in my mind, which makes me different from other writers, who tend to be middle aged or older who have to think back decades to remember what it is really like to be a teenager. You will never hear dated slang in any of my books.

Do you have any similar traits to one of you characters?
I think there are aspects of my personality in each character. I was pretty quiet and reserved as a young teenager (which is similar to Darren) so I kept asking myself what fifteen year old me would do in the situations that Darren was presented with. Then again, now, I am a pretty independent and headstrong person, so Amber's thoughts and actions are more similar to how I would react if I was going through those events now.

Where did you get your inspiration from?
Unfortunately, the story never appeared to me in a dream or while I was sitting on a train. The story evolved because I decided I wanted to write the most awesome series in existence, a series that, if I hadn't written, I would obsess over. I noticed that many of the books I love involve some sort of big epic battle (for example Harry Potter, with the battle appearing in the Deathly Hallows) so I decided that I wanted to write a series that focuses on that war more than anything else. After dwelling on this for quite a while, the story just fell into place.

If you could disappear into any book (apart from your own), which would you choose and why?
Harry Potter is the obvious answer, so I won't use it. I would love to just exist in the world of The Bartimaeus Trilogy, or possibly I could live in Camp Half Blood (Percy Jackson) or the Cirque du Freak.

If you could choose your own superpower, what would it be?
The powers of Wiccan from The Young Avengers. He can fly and shoot lightning. He's awesome.

How does it feel to know you have your own book out?
Completely surreal. This is something I have been thinking about for years, so now that it is finally happening it really doesn't feel real. But it is awesome and I am loving every minute of it!

Lex Murphy's group of friends have all dated, hated, ignored and lusted after each other for the last few years. If only there was a way of matching people perfectly to avoid all the unrequited love, dumping and drama! Then Lex's friend George is given a mysterious Sims-like game by his software-testing dad which involves building character profiles in the categories of Life, Looks and Love. Lex and George populate the game with avatars for all their mates, making a few 'wishful thinking' adjustments to the settings - and find that the next day these tinkerings have come true! But how long can this new calm, loved-up atmosphere continue?

A lovely, light, girly read from Luisa Plaja, what more do I need to say? I definetly recommend this to tween/teen girls who are looking for a unique and enjoyable read.

Lex Murphy has a strange group of friends. Not only have they all had their fair share of fall outs and break ups but her "supposed" best friend is too involved in her studies to pay attention to her, her other best friend stole her boyfriend and George, her clueless boy buddy is obsessing over a girl who won't even give him a second glance. Then when she finds out that an online game actually affects what happens to them all in real life how can she resist seeing what would happen if she altered a little thing here or there...

I've always admired how Luisa's stories have a normal teenage set up with a little bit of magic incorporated into them and this one was no exception. A game that changes people in real life. Genius, or what?! I really enjoyed the original plot line. I need to admit that when I first heard that part of the story would focus on film making I was sceptical because I thought it would be quite boring, but it turned out not to play a big part in it so it was fine. I'm also not the biggest fan of chick-lit novels so the rating 4/5 is a pretty good one! :)

I also quite liked the characters and all the twists some had. My favourite character was probably Lex or Drew. Lex was a great main character but I probably couldn't have done what she done, I wouldn't have the guts to change people's personalities! I liked her on a whole, she fit well for the book. She had a fiery, stubborn side to her which I couldn't help but like and, at some points, find comical. At the start with the little love triangle of Matt and Drew I really wanted her to get back with Matt. Then when I found out about the little... twist, I started warming up to Drew. I really liked Drew's bad boy personality with a softer side and I just started thinking how great they would be together. However, I am not giving anything away!

Overall I found Kiss, Date, Love, Hate a light, girly, enjoyable read that tween/teen girls should definetly check out! It has a really original storyline, great and relatable characters and unsuspecting twists! If you haven't already picked this up I suggest you do so now!

First Line: I remember being born.

I really wanted to like this book... but as hard as I tried, I just couldn't. When I first read the back of this book and found out that it involved dragons I wasn't too sure about it straight away. I didn't enjoy the Eragon books so I started the book with doubts... and my doubts were met.

I thought the plot could have a little potential but I just found it boring and confusing. There was practically no action. If there had been then the rating would be higher. Also, the detail in the story just dragged on... Some readers might like that sort of thing but personally, I don't. I kept on opening this book hoping that it would change - be enjoyable - but after a while I just didn't look forward to reading it at all. Parts of this books were just a little too eccentric. Unfortunetly... I was just glad to turn the last page.

The characters I didn't find enjoyable either. Or relatable. Seraphina I thought could be a little more adventurous and head strong... I didn't sympathise or feel what she felt on a whole. I just didn't really get her that well. I didn't hate her though, just a few tweaks and she could have been a better main character. Lucian (or Prince Lucian Kiggs) was probably the closest to my favourite... He was more enjoyable than most. Even though I thought he could be a little more involved.

The writing style isn't complete gibberish but I sometimes found myself having to reread phrases and wait until a light bulb sparked to life reminding me what it meant. There were also a lot of places and characters mentioned and I got a little confused and questioned what or who they were and what role they played.

Overall I just didn't find Seraphina an enjoyable read. It wasn't for me unfortunetly. If you aren't a fan of Christopher Paolini then I would not recommend reading this book... However I have noticed that it has got some good ratings so if this book appeals to you forget about my review and check it out for yourself, you might like it after all! :)

I was quite excited to start this book as soon as I got it because I have read a book by this author before and absolutely loved it! It did not disappoint, not one itty little bit! I loved it all, the plot, the characters, the set up, the situations... everything!

I love how it ties in with The Mortal Instruments series - it's really cool that way! I don't want to say too much but... we get to know where Church the cat came from in this book! I was a little scared at first that because it was set back in the 19th century that the language used in this book would be so old-fashioned I wouldn't be able to understand it but, luckily, it wasn't! Well you could tell that it was in the past but it was easy to understand. While on the writing side of things, Clare has a great writing style!

All the characters are very well-developed and instantly distinctive - in a good way! Tessa is loyal, kind, determined and a strong heroine, she's perfect for the role. Now, ahhh, a love triangle! I hate and love them at the same time! I like both Will and Jem but... I am more in favour of Will! Since this is the first book, the love triangle didn't really occur that much but I can tell it's going to be a big part in the second book. Jem is so kind, unbelievably lovely and so incredibly nice to Tessa that I feel bad but I just love characters like Will. Will's brave, strong and secretive. He's putting on an act and I really want Tessa to see through it and to the real him in the next book. I am so annoyed at him for what he did at the end though!

Expect some twists in this novel! Oh and the ending... Such a cliffhanger! I need Clockwork Prince right now! So yeah, how much did I love this book? Just buy and experience this book for yourself and you'll see where I'm coming from!

When I read the back of this book I immediately thought this would be a great read, my expectations instantly scored high and... luckily, this book really did live up!

The basic plot line for this book was refreshing and enjoyable. I loved the set up of the dystopian world. I mean, domes?! I must be honest and say I didn't like the start. I was confused and thought the writing style was a little strange at first but, I assure you, everything clears up very quickly and you settle into the writing style after a few pages!

The main characters, Aria and Perry (alternative chapters taken by each of their perspectivers) are both quite likeable. Aria is determined and more cautious while Perry is head-strong and courageous. It's turning out that I like the sort-of bad boy with a softer side to him stereotype! The romance between them develops perfectly. The sort of hate-to-love side to romance, my favourite because it usually holds some comical moments!

Overall, Under The Never Sky was a brilliant read with likeable characters, a refreshing storyline and a well-developed romance. I will definetly be looking out for this author again!

What got you into book blogging?
I got in contact with Zoe Crook from teenage book blog Bookhi a while ago and she mentioned her blog. I didn't really know what blogging was but when I saw Bookhi and loads of other amazing book blogs, I thought to myself; "What have I been missing out on?!" And I started Page-turner in 2011 :) (after designing it and re-designing it many times!)

Have you got a favourite genre, how is this your favourite?
I have loads of favourite genres! I love Dystopian books (books set in the future) and I've been reading a lot of them recently, I love them! I also love adventure novels and thrillers like Virals and Sister, Missing, with a bit of romance too! I also love YA! :)

If you could only have the books of one author, who would it be and why?
THERE ARE SO MANY!! :-) But probably Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games series. I LOVE LOVE LOVED the Hunger Games and they are also quite long and I love re-reading parts! I also love authors like Luisa Plaja, Gemma Malley, Kathy Reichs, and so many more! ;)

Who is your favourite fictional character and why?
....RUE FROM THE HUNGER GAMES!! (yes, I am very obsessed!) whenever I think of her...I nearly start crying! I also love Tori from Virals and Seizure, Delaney from Fracture, Kat from Uncommon Criminals and loads more! :)

Which fictional character do you think most resembles yourself?
I think I could be a mixture of a few rather than just one. Alice from Torn and Cassie from Finding Cassie Crazy. :)

If you could go to any fictional place out of a book, where would you go?

Awesome question! :) Probably the world Cassia lives in from Matched. I wouldn't want to live there, but I really want to see what the "perfect Society" would look like....

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Reading people's mind! :) Or maybe invisibility! I don't know which..... ;-)

What books are you most excited about being released this year?

SO SO many!! I can't wait for The Look by Sophie Bennett, the third book in the Virals series (Code) and Out of Sight, Out of Time by Ally Carter! :-)

The fourth installment in the Gallagher Girls series and the best one yet! Finally one that has received a top mark! I can not praise these books enough, you seriously have to read them! How can you resist?

Two very important words to sum up this book: MORE ACTION! I am so glad that this book notched up the action part of things - since that was pratically my only criticism for the previous three novels. The only thing that was so annoying in this book though was that hardly any of the questions left unanswered in the last book got answered! Luckily though, some of Zach's secrets came out and... woah. Oh yeah, and there's a couple twists in between these pages too!

Yes, we all know by now that Zach is my favourite character... but another character who shone through in this book was Macey. She's gone from a spoilt and reclusive character since we first met her to a kick-ass, courageous and great Gallagher Girl! She's got such an enjoyable personality and I'm glad she's over that little bad spell of her's... Again, poor Cammie! I can only imagining how annoying it would be to be shut out and not get told anything... especially since she's in the middle of it all and everyone's talking about her!

In conclusion Only The Good Spy Young is the best book so far following the adventures of, spy-in-training, Cammie Morgan and it deserves the high mark of 5/5. The next book, Out of Sight, Out of Time is coming out this year and I just have to read it since this novel ended in a cliffhanger!

This is the third book in the Gallagher Girls series and, yet again, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Another exciting semester, making for another great read.

The Gallagher Academy's new term brings a mystery. Someone is after Macey and to protect their best friend, Cammie, Liz and Bex take it on themselves to do some digging, but wherever they go things never seem to add up. Someone knows a lot more than they're letting on, but who? And why does mysterious spy-guy, Zach, keep showing up?

My favourite character remained the same. Zach. He's just such an intriguing character - you just want to find out who he really is. He has a tendency just to disappear and whenever he did, it was so frustrating! He wouldn't let anyone in on anything! Of course, Cammie the Chameleon (quite a fitting name for this novel since a big part of it is the art of disguise) was still a very enjoyable character. I also felt sorry toward her because nobody would tell her anything, if I were in her situation, I'd be annoyed and upset too!

The only criticism I have is the action... again. Did everyone get what I meant when I said action action in the last post? Well I'm meaning the type of action in the Alex Rider novels (if you are a fan of them, you should try the Gallagher Girls series). The scene near the start of this novel was quite action-like, so if there was just a little more like that then it would be one mark better! Also, the twist near the end I thought was quite predictable... but that didn't change my opinion on the book at all, if anything, it added to the book! It let us into what the next book would focus on!

Overall, this was another very pleasurable read by Ally Carter and I definetly recommend reading this series! Great characters, another good story-line and generally... just great!

Cross My Heart and Hope To Spy by Ally Carter

This book is the second installment in the Gallagher Girls series and, I must say, I enjoyed it a little better than the first. It's kind of hard to review a series because you can't really say anything different from what you've already said about the previous book, so I'm going to try and focus on a different feature for every review.

The Gallagher Academy has always been an all girls school but this semester the spy school is playing host to a class of boys. But these boys are different... not only are they very highly trained, they're secretive and mysterious and Cammie and her friends know they're all hiding something. Determined to find out what it, the girls plan a mission. But one boy in particular has caught Cammie's eye... Zach. The last thing she needs is another boy problem but he's a puzzle to her that she needs to solve.

Something I didn't mention in the last post was the writing style of these books. It switched every now and then to a Summary of Surveillance where The Operatives (Cammie and co.) logged in the events. It was a refreshing quality to the book. Also, it's written from a future perspective (everything has already happened) so at certain points in the books in brackets would state something like: later Macey said that...

Zach was probably my favourite character in this book. I loved the fact he was a sort-of bad boy but with secrets. I found it comical that every time he put on a cocky act, Cammie would get annoyed. I much prefer Zach over her ex-boyfriend, Josh. I was hoping that they would become a couple but... well... I don't want to say too much. I guess you just have to read this series yourself ;)

Overall this was a really good read and it only lost the one mark because the action quality again. Don't get me wrong, there was more action in this book than the first one but when I say action, I mean action action. I can't believe it had taken me this long to read this series! I always had liked the sound of these books but never really got around to reading them but now I'm glad I did. What really drew me in was the fact that they were like the femal version of the Alex Rider novels, and in away they are similar, but not completely as I had hoped...

I had thought that there would be quite a lot of action in this book but unfortunetly not as much as I had hoped. The main storyline, I know, said that Cammie fell in love, but I expected some action because she went to a spy school. I still loved it all, the plot included, but just felt a little more action would make it a tad better.

I loved all the characters! The main character, Cammie, is so cool and I loved her personality on a whole. I also really liked her friends Bex, the butt-kicking one, and Liz, the super genuis! Perfect spy group, right? Enter Macey McHenry. A spoilt, rich and fiery addition to the Gallagher Academy. As the story progressed and you got to know Macey, I couldn't help but warm to her!

In conclusion, this book was quite a good read, with a great setting (I mean, a spy school?!) and great characters. If only a little more action were involved then this would be a perfect read, but I still recommend it!

Want a book that's full of action, fantasy and thrilling adventures? Then this is the book for you! You won't be able to tear your eyes away. The first chapter instantly drew me in, no scratch that, the first page! So it's safe to say, boy this book is good!

Clary Fray has a geeky friend and an overprotective mum - sound normal? But after an evening in a night club attracts a trio of demon hunters and a mysterious demon, she suddenly finds herself whisked up into a dangerous world which throws her whole life upside down. Vampires, werewolves and warlocks aren't the only things that have been hidden from Clary, everywhere she goes secrets aren't far behind, and mysterious shadowhunter, Jace is just another piece to her puzzle.

All my reviews are probably sounding like the same, but really, this plot line is awesome too! It's not the usual vampires and werewolves, this book contains a lot of supernatural beings which makes for an epic read. Plus, the writing style is amazing!

Clary is a great main character, she's courageous and I love the fact that she doesn't let anybody push her around - or do anythings she's told! Another character I liked was Isabelle. She was fiery and, of course, helped fight off the demons. But overall, my favourite character was probably Jace. When he acted cocky to annoy Clary, I couldn't help but find it comical. I really enjoyed all of the characters, well developed and relatable - well as relatable as you can get to a shadowhunter anyway...

I give this book a 5/5 (wow, that's all I seem to be giving, these days) because, let's face it, this book sounds amazing and is amazing. I'm definetly going to take out the second installment City of Ashes next time I'm in the library. If you've not read this book, you are seriously missing out!

I thought I'd give myself a little break from all the reviews I'm doing and so I decided why not show other book lovers my most anticipated reads of 2012? These won't be in a particular order (picking ten is already hard enough, thank you very much!) so bare with me. Also these blurbs may contain spoilers because some of them are sequels. So without further-a-do, here are some of my most can't-wait-to-tear-open books of 2012.

The Selection by Kiera Cass (April 24th):

When this book was at it's height of popularity in the book blogging world and getting all these amazing reviews, I never really thought twice about buying it myself. But now, I am so glad I did. I had been up in the big city and of course dragged my family into Waterstones (a bookaholic's heaven!) and when I noticed it, I suddenly remembered all the fabulous reviews it got, so I suppose I just had to get it, if you think about it, I was pressured really... It is such a unique, compelling and well-written novel which I couldn't help but get caught into, I literally didn't resurface for hours on end!

Dystopian is really in right now and before recently I hadn't really read that much novels set in the future. This plotline, however, is really original and refreshing and if every dystopian book is like this then I'm sure to love them all! Rhine Ellery was trying so hard not to get caught by the Gatherers but when she falls for one of their traps, disguised to be somewhere to work, she ends up finding herself the property of rich and naive, Linden. Though he treats her with respect, Rhine knows she can never be who he wants her to be. She needs to escape, and find her way back home. But to escape she must win over Linden's favour, but that proves difficult as she starts falling for the servant, Gabriel...

The main character, Rhine is very kind, cunning and loyal. We witness everything in the book through her. The writing style is very emotive and well-written. I admired her courage and just her whole character really. I also quite liked Cecily. Whenever she was around, there was never a dull moment. Even though she is stubborn and persistent, I couldn't help but pity her. She was so young compared to the other wives and was going through so much. At times she did show her nice, sweet side though, so I suppose she can be forgiven.

Lauren DeStefano sure has written a masterpiece! I recommend this book to 13+ who like a good dystopian novel, with a little splash of romance. I'm sure if you read this book you'll find it a great read so go on, you know you want to! I rated this 5/5 because it is well-written, has a good storyline and easily relatable and likeable characters, isn't that enough to tempt you?

Divergent is a thrilling, compelling and amazing read which has everything from a unique plot to enjoyable characters. It is a gripping page turner that you won't be able to resist!

Beatrice's dystopian Chicago is split into five factions. Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Erudite (the intelligent) and Dauntless (the brave). On her sixteenth birthday Beatrice must decide what path she will choose. Will she trust her head, or her heart? Her family are Abnegation, but staying with them means lying to herself and sacrificing who she really is. Is she ready to take the easy choice in life or will she plunge into the unknown?

I am glad to tell you that I was absolutely delighted at the faction Tris chose! I really hoped she would choose that one right from the start and she didn't let me down! This plot is so unique and different from any other books I've read and by plot standards is probably my favourite, it kept me hooked and made the book an overall pleasurable read.

The main character, Beatrice (or known as Tris after her decision of factions) is a fiery, butt-kicking heroine who made for a very likeable character. She was courageous and determined - she didn't like to back down. Four was also very intriguing. At the start I thought he was just the elusive, admired stereotype but as the story progressed so did Four, and you began to see a little of the true him. Of course, when comes the goodies, the baddies aren't far behind. You will probably start sizzling when you meet them! Also worth a mention is the romance. It is light and sweet, nothing to over the top.

I give this book a high rating of 5/5 because overall it has an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G plot line, well-developed characters, a cute romance and I found everything just very enjoyable. I really hope that you buy this book because you will not regret it. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the second instalment, Insurgent which comes out sometime this year!

I'm BACK!!!

Here's the deal. I am missing book blogging so much! Since I quit all I've been thinking about is starting it up again and now, I really think I want too! I stopped this blog back in... wow, October because I was taking on too much books from publishers and authors and pressuring myself into reviewing them as fast as I could, which resulted in me not enjoying reading as much and falling behind on homework and studying. Now that I am enjoying read once again (yay!) I think I could just start this blog up once more and review books I buy - and possibly accepting books for review during holidays ;) - so the same thing doesn't repeat. I would just like to thank all the followers that stuck by this blog while I was away!

When I saw this in my school library, I don't know why, but I just had to have it. I think part of me went, oh look at that pretty cover! but another part of me really wanted it for some reason, and yesterday, when I was browsing through my old posts I came across it in one of my wishlists posts! I am glad to say that this book didn't disappoint. I loved it!
I loved the storyline, characters, the writing style, just everything!
The storyline included faeries and I was actually quite excited about that part, since I'd never read a novel with faeries in it, and what the synopsis states is true, faeries are not what you think they are going to be in this novel!
The characters are well written and play great parts in the story, but my favourites probably have to be Laurel (the main character) and Tamani. Laurel had just the right personality and I really liked her from the start. She's brave, loyal and a faery! I do not really want to go into much detail about Tamani, because if I do I will probably reveal spoilers.

I give this 5/5 because I just found it a great read. I really, really, really hope you will read this, I would say it is a must! I'm actually going to order the sequels, that is how good it is!

When I was contacted by the publisher to review this book, I wasn't completely sure that it was my thing, and after reading a good load of the book I began to wonder if I, in fact, was right.

I found the beginning boring and I was actually thinking about putting the book down but then it suddenly picked up and I found myself absorbed in the action. I also found it a little confusing because I don't know much about weapons or planes.

I bet you're all now thinking, well this book doesn't sound that good then I feel I ought to tell you that one enjoyable factor that I found kept me reading was the characters. The two main characters, Jack and Angus are caught up in the middle of a feud between two teams, The Revisionists and VIGIL. Jack's dad (along with some help) had managed to create a time machine, the Tauras, so they (the Revisionists) could travel back in time and prevent past disasters. VIGIL, on the other hand feel that it is too dangerous for people to re-write history so they try to stop them. Jack and Angus side with VIGIL, but, naturally, they usually end up in the past.

My favourite character in this book is Sophie. She meets Jack and Angus when they end up in the past. She's the exact brave, determined, butt-kicking girl any female reader would admire. She's similar to Angus. He too is adventurous, and brave. Jack is slightly more cautious and scared but he can shine in certain situations.

I recommend this book to readers 12+ who like weapons, action and a splash of history. Even though, I personally feel that it is just slightly more aimed at boys, if you're a girl who likes the sound of it go ahead! I love the Alex Rider novels, even though stereotypically it looks like it's for boys, so it's all about finding the books for you.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?
I have always loved writing, though it didn’t dawn on me for quite a while that I may be able to take it to the level of publication. When Iwas younger, I would write stories about horses because that’s what I knew best. Now I’ve been able to finesse my love of fantasy and horses into the same story.

What do you hope to achieve with your book?
I will settle for anything. I love hearing from people that they’ve read Defiance and enjoyed it and I hope I can continue to hear that for a long time. To be able to share a story I’ve created is a wonderful and very rewarding experience.

Who is your favourite character?
Declan. He’s a joy to write because he is surrounded by so many enigmas and shady secrets. When I introduced him in Defiance, I thought he would be a temporary character. As the story progressed, I quickly discovered that he held an important position for everyone – the characters and the readers. Very much the loner with an attitude, Declan always has something up his sleeve that may put him in the position of being the bad guy, but I can assure you that there is much more to him than that!

Have you got any ideas for future books?
I’m currently writing the second book in The Successor Series and hope to continue the series after that. Once the series has been finished, I can see myself writing more about Iledora and Vivian’s reign, but from another perspective.

If you could choose any super power what would it be?
To see the future, and plan accordingly!

Do you have any passions/interests other than writing?
I own a horse and he takes up a great part of my daily activities. I’m also a runner and spend much of my time training for races that fund research for illnesses or children in need. But aside from being a fitness fanatic, I enjoy photography and baking.

Favourite Colour? Blue.
Favourite Animal? Horses! They have been my life since I was seven or eight and things haven't changed.
Reading or Writing? Writing. That's my problem. I do more writing than reading and my ideas all dry up because I'm never doing anything else!

Since I was on holiday when the second chapter of this ebook came out, I am going to put both reviews of chapters two and three (published last night) in the same post.

Chapter #2 Review...
When the first chapter finished, we were left on a cliffhanger, one in which Rémy was facing being caught. Luckily she did manage to escape but don't be too disappointed, there is more mystery and action thrown into this chapter just to keep you on your toes! I also got a very, very, very small hint that there might be a bit of romance in this novel, anyone agree with me? Also, in this chapter, you find out a very big plot twist but, you've guessed it, you are still kept in the shadows. Teasing or what? | Chapter Rating: 5/5

Chapter #3 Review...
Woah, Chapter 3 is just...woah! I can't believe they accused Thaddeus! I would go into more detail about what I was just rambling about but if I did it would be a spoiler.
In this chapter Rémy has to escape, now she has to figure out what she's going to do, how will she get the real Ocean of Light?
Another character is introduced in this chapter too, a boy call J. He lets spill some very interesting and probably helpful information about, who Rémy thinks is the one in possesion of the diamond... | Chapter Rating: 5/5

My vote is cast and I can't wait for the next chapter to come out, some questions need to be answered!

Interview with Author Rachel Higginson

Today I am very glad to welcome talented author, Rachel Higginson to Booktastic Reviews! After reading only the first of her ebooks in the The Star-Crossed Series, Reckless Magic (review here) I am hooked and can not wait to read the next in the four-part series, Hopeless Magic.

Where did you get the inspiration for The Star-Crossed Series?
That's a really good question. I had been reading a lot of fantastic young adult paranormal stuff and was actually inspired by great writers. But I also wanted a very strong female character, someone who would fall in love but have a bigger destiny. When I sat down to write Reckless Magic, I had an entirely different intention and idea in mind, but Eden just came to life in front of me and once she was there, the rest of the story fell into place.

If you could meet any of your characters, who would it be and why?
I would love to meet Eden! I wrote her as sort of an exaggerated version of myself and I think it would be so fun to get to know her. I would also love to spend a Friday night with Avalon and his team, Jericho, Titus, Xander and Xavier. I think we would have the best time and they would probably get me into all kinds of trouble, like cow-tipping!

If you could have any supernatural power, what would it be - it can be any of the four magic groups in your novels?
They would all be great to have! But if I had to pick one... I think it would have to be shape-shifting! Wouldn't it be great to get to be something entirely different for a day? I would shift into some tiger or something and spend the day in the jungle getting a totally different perspective on the world!

Have you always wanted to be a writer, if so, what sort of genre did you write as a child?
I have always been a writer, journaling or short stories, or different endings to stories that I didn't like. I really have always written. I remember as a fourth grader, I wrote a play that was a sequel to Alice in Wonderland and then I had all of the neighborhood children in the middle of the street in costume, acting it out! In junior high, I really found my niche in poetry. I had notebooks full of poetry. I really feel like writing down all of my thoughts in a creative way helped me to figure out who I was and what I wanted out of life. It was very self-defining.

Do you have a favourite place to write? Any necessities you need while writing?
Alone! I have three little kids and so anytime I can find and hour or two by myself turns into my favorite place to write! And I absolutely must have chocolate when writing!! If I sit down at the computer without it, it's not long before I'm up again rummaging through cabinets looking for something chocolate! If it has caramel inside, all the better!

Quick Fire Questions:

Dark Chocolate or white chocolate? Dark, most definitely. But I'm not one to turn down any kind of chocolate.
Printed or ebook? Oh, can I cheat and say both? Nothing beats curling up with a book in hand and reading it straight through, but ebooks are so life-changing! It's too hard to choose.
Favourite animal? Elephants! And in Hopeless Magic, there is a great chapter where Eden gets to ride elephants and I am so jealous!
Favourite colour? Pink. I am a girly girl to the core!

Where can I begin? I absolutely loved this book! I loved the plot, the characters, the style of writing... everything!
The main character, Eden Matthews is just your usual "freak" but when she is introduced to her own world - a world that had been kept a secret from her - she finds that the people are just like her. When I found out that it was written in first person I was a little bit sceptical because I usually read third person novels but I actually enjoyed reading Eden's thoughts and opinions. It gave you a better insight as to what kind of person she was. I loved the fact she's determined and slightly stubborn as well as brave and opinionated. The perfect main character for this novel.
Since I have already mentioned that the writing is in first person, I suppose I don't have to go into much detail. Basically, it's told by a teenage girl with a load of personality.
I really hope I can get my hands of the next book in this four-part series (The Star-Crossed Series), Hopeless. Thank you so much to the fantastic author Rachel Higginson who gave me the opportunity to read this!
I hope I've got the message across about just how much I love this book and I hope that you have obtained from this review that you simply must go and read it.

When I first heard about this book I instantly thought "is this my type of thing?" but, now having read the first chapter and got a little taster of it, I think it will be! I was instantly intrigued and was very glad when it got straight into a little suspense and action!
The main character, Rémy Brunel, is very likeable, even though she's a jewel thief! There's just something about her that you immediately like.
I really can't wait to see what happens, I'm impatiently awaiting the next chapter!

There's something off about Zach Bevian. He doesn't behave like the other boys do under the spell. Although he complies with Kristen's demands, there is always a flicker of resentment in his eyes. Confused, Kristen doesn't know what to think. Zach is hot and then cold, hostile towards her and then flirting with her. Does he hate her, or is he falling for her? Is he trying to kill her, or is he trying to save her?

This book sounds fab! What a great idea for a novel, don't you think? I can't wait to get on to reading this! :D

I’ve been writing for years, it’s almost like therapy for me. Last year I finally started to get serious about it, sending out some short stories and entering writing contests. Low and behold I actually won a contest! It was the 2010 Textnovel.com writing contest, and I won with my book Prime which is in the limbo process of finding publication. While waiting for that to happen, I decided to jump on the ebook band wagon with another book that is close to my heart, Morning Rising.

At it’s core this YA fantasy novel was inspired by a friend’s issues with drugs, and the ups and downs that had on her life and everyone around her. Of course this book is a fantasy, so it’s not straight up an issues book or anything. Instead, it follows Kara, who thought her best friend Dylan was just a normal, messed up teenage girl, until they were both pulled into the world of Inbetween. There she discovers that Dylan is a princess from the Daylands, and Kara is her Guardian. They were both sent to the human world to hide Dylan from Demitar, the ruler of Inbetween, who wants to claim her because she was born of light and darkness. Whichever side she chooses, she will become their most powerful ally. As her Guardian, Kara is the only one who can help Dylan choose the side of light.

Until reaching Inbetween, Kara has always been Dylan’s sidekick, going along with whatever she says and doing her best to keep Dylan from killing herself with too many drugs. In Inbetween, Kara begins to realize she is more than a sidekick, that she’s always been the one looking out for Dylan. As new friends show her respect for being a Guardian, she begins to take on more of a leader role, becoming stronger in who she is and what she wants.

I really wanted to enjoy this book, but I have to be honest, it wasn't as good as the first one. It got to confusing and after a while, I started to get a little tired of it.
The start did seem promising as it went straight into the action but afterward I was just to confused that I didn't settle into the novel as I would have liked. Overall you do sort of get the main points and all but it's the little things in books that you want to know. The language is really descriptive but I just wasn't advanced enough to understand some of it.
Judging my review so far, you're probably thinking she never enjoyed this novel at all but at some parts, I did. For example, there is a BIG twist near the end which you can't helped but be amazed by. I also enjoyed finding out more about the characters and reading about Roran.
My favourite characters pretty much remained the same (Arya and Saphira), but this time another character was introduced that I found in my favour. I don't want to say anything though because it would be a MAJOR spoiler.
Arya, the elf that Eragon seems to be falling for, has now accompanied Saphira, Orik and Eragon back to her city, Ellesmera (oh yeah, and there's another twist somewhere in there too...) and you get to see her personality blossom.
I give this book the rating of 2/5 because I feel it wasn't absolutely terrible, but OK. I would have liked to have given this a higher mark but at the end of the day, in my opinion, this book just wasn't what I had hoped.

Brimming with magic, adventure and action, I found Eragon a very enjoyable read. The thing that stunned me the most with this book was the fact that the author had written it when he was only 15 years old! The style of writing in this book you would expect from an extremely talented adult but to think that it was only a person slightly older than me is just amazing!
The characters in this book are very well described and each have their own part in adding to the book. The main character, Eragon, is brave, determined and very likeable. Apart from Eragon and Arya (an elf), my favourite character was the dragon, Saphira. Even though in this book the highest she ages is only a few months, she is very wise, fiery and determined. I love the fact that she sometimes has to keep Eragon behaving and how she protects him from danger.
As I said before, the writing style used in this book amazed me. Nevertheless, I did find myself not knowing what certain (and I'm probably going to sound very childish here) big words meant. I'm not sure if that was because they were made up or because I had just never heard of them. I also found myself rather confused with the names of places, but in my defense, a lot of places were mentioned. I just found it hard to remember which place had what and whether it was good or bad, etc.
I score this book 3/5 because the ideas in this novel are unique and overall I did enjoy reading it. This might look like a bad mark but I reassure you it isn't. I recommend this book to people that can stand a lengthy novel.
I would just like to extend my thanks to the person (you know who you are) who sent me this book and the two other sequels. I can not wait until I delve into the pages of the next in the Inheritance Cycle novels, Eldest.

I liked it. Fantasy and adventure are my two favourite genres so when I figured that this novel had meshed the two of them together, well my opinion was set.
There are a lot of characters in this book and at the start of the book I was wondering if that would be a problem but after a while I began to remember who was who and what their personalities were like. All the characters have very different personalities which I found a good quality because you get to see how they handle certain situations. I haven't got a favourite character because I was reviewing only part of the book which didn't give me enough time to find one.
If I had to critisize this novel then I would say I was a little confused at a part near the beginning but overall I did enjoy this book and would happily read the next part. The book might be a little fast paced for some people but I actually liked the pace. It never spent three chapters to set the scene, it introduced you to the characters and then went straight into the adventure.

Interview with Author Cathy Cassidy!

Everybody has heard of Cathy Cassidy, right? Probably! She's had tons of best sellers and I am pretty sure that the majority of you reading this will have read at least one of her books (if not, don't worry, just go pick one up from your local library!).
I was so happy when she agreed to answer some of my questions and I hope you are just as happy reading them and hopefully, just hopefully, you'll find something out that you never knew about this fantastic author :o)

If you got the chance to spend a day with any character in any of your books, who would it be and why?
Probably Scarlett. I was quite quiet and shy at school, more like Jude or Hannah, so it would be brilliant to spend a day with someone like Scarlett who is brave and bright and fiery!

My favourite book is Lucky Star, where did you get your inspiration for that book?
Lucky Star was written to give the character Mouse, who first appeared as a small boy in my first book Dizzy, the happy ending I thought he deserved. So many readers wrote asking for a sequel or to find out what happened next to Mouse that I couldn't resist jumping ahead a few years and writing a book from his viewpoint. Mouse is still my favourite character of all!

Where do you like to write?
I work on Mac laptop so technically I can write anywhere, but my fave place to work is in the writing shed in my garden. It's very pretty as sheds go, and has no phone or internet so no interruptions! In the winter it's a bit cold, so then I snuggle up indoors, usually on the sofa with a mug of hot chocolate at my side for extra inspiration!

If you could chose a super power, what would it be and why?
The power to grant wishes...

Did you write as a child - what did you usually write about?
Everything! Adventure, ponies, sailing, Victorian ladies, boarding school... it didn't matter that I knew next to nothing about any of those things! As a teen I wrote about boys, boys and more boys...

Are you working on a new book right now, if so, can you tell us a little bit about it?
I am just beginning the plotting for the third book in the Chocolate Box Girls series, Summer's Dream. It's early days, but I will say that it will be an exciting summery read with a few shocks and surprises hidden away in there...

How does it feel to know you are one of the most admired authors in the world?
I do know I have the coolest readers ever, and they are very loyal, and that means a huge amount to me. For me, just being able to earn a living writing books is a dream come true. I know I am very, very lucky.

Woah. This book is good. Crammed full of action, adventure, fantasy and mystery, this novel has the whole package!
The main characters, Kate, Michael and Emma P. have their own very different and distinct personalities and I feel without one of them, this book would have felt like a part of it was missing. Kate is the protective, older sister, Michael is the slightly younger brother who loves magical creatures (especially dwarves!) and Emma - even though she is the youngest - is tough and fiery. I can't really say who is my favourite character because I like them all, but the character that stands out just a tiny bit more - apart from the three main characters - is Gabriel. The children meet Gabriel when he comes to their rescue and he has a strong bond with Emma. I admire his bravery and determination and the love and reassurance he gives Emma.
If I had to admit a slight problem I found in this book, it would be that I thought the beginning was a bit unrealistic at a certain part.
Overall though, I found this book quite enjoyable.

What a strange book. I don't even know what to think about it. Apparently it is a prequel to a novel called, Skellig, so maybe if I had read that then I would have got this story a little better. I am not saying it was terrible, just rather strange. I think that is what the author is wanting, though.
Mina, the main character, is slightly mad and strange, herself and the diary she keeps, just proves it. She is rather shy but has many opinions.
Has anyone out there read this book and agree with my review?

A little while back I finished the first three books in the Pony Club Rival series by Stacey Gregg and so I've decided to post about all of them in the same post. If you like the sound of these books after reading the first synopsis, it might be a spoiler to read the second and third one, if you don't mind though, be my guest!

Yes, yes, yes, you've guessed right. I love horses! So of course I loved these books. I can't really tell you much more than I loved the plots each book had, I enjoyed reading about the characters (and the horses obviously!) and I am awaiting the arrival of the next book in this fabby series that is not yet out! I do hope that you will try these books and if you are horse crazy I think if you gave these books a go, you would enjoy them greatly!

This is definitely a girly read, maybe for slightly younger readers than me but I still found it rather enjoyable!

I've had this book for ages but I had somehow managed to dismiss it for a long time. Well to be honest I think I gave it a go but forgot to finish, but this time I did and I found it quite a light and pleasurable read!

If ever there was a character that was a bully, it would be Ashley Spencer (the main Ashley). She is definitely horrible to Lauren (my favourite character). She doesn't want to give up the title of queen bee, especially to a new and improved Lauren Page, no way. Ashley Li, in other words, Lili is practically Ashley's servant and Ashley Alioto, better known as A.A., can sometimes be moody (but she's probably the nicest Ashley).

The only thing that let this book down was the ending. It wasn't anything like I had planned (even though sometimes that's a good thing, but in this case not) and it disappointed me. I would still encourage girls to give this a go!

This book is plain brilliant, a lovely change from all the romance novels that I've been reading lately! Viral is based around forensic anthropology which, I feel, is a nice touch to a mystery novel.
One of many likeable factors in this book, are the characters. Each individual sets off the book perfectly, and I think I would feel some part of the book was missing if one of them wasn't there. It is really hard to pick a favourite character in a book, this one especially. I love all of them. The main four just a tad more. Oh yeah, and the little wolf pup! The main character, Tory Brennan is niece to famous forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (the main character in Reich's books for adults) and so she has some skills for anthropology. She is quite tomboy-ish and confident and I like that about her. She doesn't care for flowery dresses or sparkly necklaces, she thrives on adventure. I don't really want to go into more detail about any of the other characters incase you want to find out about them yourself but I feel I have to tell you about one more. Hi, short for Hiram is one of Tory's best friends and he has a love for gadgets. At some parts in the book, I found him quite comical - he was the only one that put a smile on my face.
I'm recommending this book for teenagers for the simple reason it contains some use of mild language (but nothing too bad!).

Isn't the summary just great? How could someone not get lured in? Especially if you are left with a lot of questions from the first novel that you really want answered.
The characters continued to be well developed and the main character, Luce still managed to stay my favourite. There were also a few character traits that were thrown in for good measure and a whole load of other characters introduced.
As I have said already, when I started this book I was hoping for some questions that arised in the first book to be answered, but Kate decided to keep us waiting and only answered a few (and managed to make more). Very teasing.
Another quality I love is Kate's writing. At the start of the book when I found it a bit slow paced and boring, the writing was the one thing that kept me reading. Kate has a knack for writing very descriptively and I love it!
I also love the cover. It's gorgeous! I especially love the dress in this one.
The novel left on a major cliffhanger (well maybe not major but one that has left me really wanting more!) and I can't wait to read Passion (the next novel in this fabulous series) which comes out Summer 2011.

After reading great reviews about this book, I just had to have it! I was so glad when I found it in the book fair and just could not wait to start reading it. This is the first book by Lauren Kate I have read and she certainly gave a good first impression. This is a great book! Really unique with well developed characters and an unusual plot.

The main character, Luce has just the right personality to fit perfectly into this novel and she is one of my favourite characters because of her determination and kindness towards her friends. I also felt a little bit sorry for her because Daniel always seemed to block her out and never involve her. Another character I liked was Arriane. She immediately befriended Luce when she moved to Sword & Cross (a school) and made her feel wanted. I also liked her because of her boldness and confidence.

I would also like to mention how much I love this cover. A great cover for a great story. Dark, scary, mysterious...

I really recommend this book because it is really good. I bought the sequel, Torment last night and I started reading it not that long ago and already I am loving it!

Interview with Book Blogger, Zoe from Bookhi

Please welcome to Booktastic Reviews, Zoe from Bookhi. Her blog is one of my favourite book blogs so I am delighted to have her on my blog today! :o)

For bloggers out there that haven't yet come across your blog, how would you describe it to them?

My blog is a book blog (obviously) where I review the books I read and generally talk about them. It (hopefully) has a friendly atmosphere and anyone is welcome to comment, take part and become a follower. My blog is colourful, entertaining and I hope you all enjoy it!

Does your blog have any special qualities?

I am not sure my blog has that many special qualities, but I hope it is different in a good way that people enjoy reading. I have a monthly post where people can judge which cover they like best (this is new). I also have pages where I post upcoming releases, what is coming soon to the blog and an index of my book reviews. On my blog I also have a poll, what I am reading, author sites, my button and a 'book of the month'.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have the books of one author, who would it be and why?

This is tricky! There are so many brilliant books that it is very hard to choose just one. And most books rarely you can enjoy reading again and again. If I had to choose it would be 'Swapped By A Kiss' by Luisa Plaja. It is not necessarily my favourite book, but it would keep me occupied when stranded. This fab book cheers me up and really is just....fab!!

Which movie (that has been based on a book) is your favourite?

I would have to say one of the HP movies, since they aren't many movies that I know of based on book. My favourite one is the latest one 'Deathly Hallows'. It was real and imaginative and the director did a really good job. I am a HP geek!! *HP meaning Harry Potter.

Do you write any stories in your spare time? What type of genre do you mainly go for?

Yes, I love to write stories. I manily write about real life problems like Jacqueline Wilson and Cathy Cassidy. Sometimes I write stories on romance similar to Luisa Plaja. However I am currently writing a short story where a girl goes into the future, when being whisked away by a tornado. I started writing a novel but I never finished it. I would to have a writing profession someday and write novels for kids - finished novels!

Which character (in any book) do you think resembles your own personality?

I think Pearl from 'My Sister Jodie' by Jacqueline Wilson. She is quiet, obedient (ish) and LOVES to read! And write. We don't look anything alike but this question is asking about personality.

Which Harry Potter (by J.K Rowling) book is your favourite?

Definitely the last one. It is full of surprising twists and everything comes together at the end. My second favourite is the 'Half Blood Prince' because that is one of the amazing books too. Go J.K Rowling!!

Are you more of a Cathy Cassidy fan or a Jacqueline Wilson fan and why?

Ah...ooh....good question. Correction: hard question! I really can't decide. They write much different books yet they are both amazing writers. CC's books I can relate too and they have good story lines. However JW's books are really original and gripping. Sorry, I can't decide!!

Which fictional character would you love to be friends with?

Inide from 'Indigo Blue' by Cathy Cassidy. She is imaginative, a good friend and I think would be really fun to talk too. Also, I would love to meet her cute little sister Mistie!!

Which book can you not wait to come out?

Can I say two? 'Kiss, Date, Love, Hate' by Luisa Plaja is coming out in July and sounds fantastic and 'Vanilla Skye' by Cathy Cassidy is the second book in the The Chocolate Box Girls series and I really enjoyed the first one.

Quick Fire Questions:

Favourite snack? Crisps.

Favourite animal? I love every animal. I would love to have a pet dog the most though!

Favourite colour? Blue.

Favourite hobby? Reading of course :)

Hardcover of Paperback? Paperbacks are cheaper but hardbacks tend to be nicer covers... To be honest I don't mind - as long as the same brilliant story is inside waiting for me...

Interview with Author Judy Dearborn Nill

Please welcome Judy Nill, author of The Rise and Fall of Bibi Karstad to Booktastic Reviews. She very kindly agreed to answer a few of my questions:

Have you always wanted to be an author?
If always means a long time, yes. I think I was about 10 when I first became aware of how much I liked to write. I used to "rewrite" my favorite books and comic books--create new characters, write and illustrate stories for them.

Who is your favourite character out of The Rise and Fall of Bibi Karstad and why?
Besides Bibi, I'd say Bibi's mom Sally (and of course Sally's 25,000-year-old "wheeze bag" spirit guide), because Bibi thinks they're both weird whereas readers may just find them funny.

What is your favourite type of genre?
I like YA and cozy mystery. I also like some literary. I read a lot of memoir, biography and nonfiction as well.

What was your favourite book as a child?
Snowbound in Hidden Valley by Holly Wilson. I read and reread that book so many times, I wore it out. Have two copies of it now so that I'll always have it to reread. It's the story of a big blizzard (woo-hoo! one of my favorite concepts as a kid, because where I grew up it seldom snowed) that traps the main character among people her family are suspicious of.

Are you working on a new book right now?
I was until I got my three YAs up on Kindle, and then I got a contract for a picture book (first reader) which is to be titled Samuel and Sophia: A Tale of Two Teddies. Online promotion of books takes way more time than I imagined. The book I was working on could eventually be my first novel for adults.

Where did you get your inspiration for The Rise and Fall of Bibi Karstad?
I woke up from a dream about levitating to the ceiling that was so real I actually stood in the middle of the room and tried to float upwards! Later I got to thinking how fun it would be to write a novel about a girl who can fly but who has no control over it.

Did you do any other jobs before publishing your first book?
Yes, I've worked in several fields, including as a newspaper reporter, a college journalism instructor, and a therapist. I now work out of my home office as a mental health and couples counselor.

What does it feel like to know you have your own book out?
Depends on which day I'm doing the feeling! Some days it's great. I especially enjoyed getting the first paperback copies of my books (I put three out at the same time; the other two are Just for Kicks about a girl who loves horses and martial arts and Simple Twists of Faith about a girl in love with her married pastor). Other days I think publication isn't all it's cracked up to be. The work doesn't end when the stories are in print. It just goes on....

Quick Fire Questions:

Favourite author?
Madeleine L'Engle. I've read everything she wrote, many books several times over. My favorite single book is An Acceptable Time followed by A Swiftly Tilting Planet and A Ring of Endless Light.

Favourite Animal?
That's hard. I love cute, cuddly animals of all sorts. Love stuffed animals, too. But probably dophins because they're so playful, bright, and helpful to people. It's disturbing that some are trained to do dangerous and destructive work for the military.

Favourite song?
Hmm. Also hard. Depends on the kind of music. I love certain songs from Les Mis, Phantom and Superstar. I love classical choral music such as Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus" and Allegri's "Miserere." In a more popular vein, a current favorite is Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" sung by Susan Boyle. However, she doesn't use all the lyrics, and that's too bad, because they're amazing.

Favourite TV show?
Right now it's BBC's Doc Martin. I used to love Joan of Arcadia and mourned when it went off the air.

This story definitely scores points for originality. Never before have I heard of the ideas that are in this book! When Judy contacted me requesting a review I wasn't sure if I was going to like this but when I started reading I realised that I should have had higher expectations.

The main character, Bibi Karstad is very easy to relate to and is very likable. You don't really find out anything about her past until the end which is quite a teasing quality. She doesn't let people walk all over her, she stands up for what she believes in and is also quite down to earth.

Unfortunately I found this book a bit confusing but I did start to get some answers towards the end. I am putting this down to the fact that I had to quit reading it for a little while because of a school project.

I recommend this novel to older readers because there is some use of mild language (but not much!). I will happily tell you to read this because it is quite a good book all-in-all.

Lily Alone by Jacqueline Wilson

Jacqueline Wilson is one of my favourite authors and when I heard of this book I instantly wanted it. Of course it did not disappoint, not one tiny bit. I knew I was reading a best seller as soon as I opened it.

Lily Alone follows the story of eleven year old, Lily Green who is left with her siblings when her Mum goes off on holiday with her new boyfriend, Gordon. I admire Lily for many reasons, one of them being the lengths she takes to feed her family. Another character who I like - I actually like all of her siblings - is Bliss. She is really shy and obedient and helps Lily out a lot.

I found this book a very emotional read, one which made me appreciate just how much I had. It isn't all sad though, you will find some funny parts in it - especially if Baxter is there! I can't describe how much I loved this book, it was FANTASTIC!!!

Debating Wednesdays #1 - JOIN NOW :)

I have a great idea! Every Wednesday I will be holding a debate, e.g. Which genre do you prefer, Romance or Adventure? I think it will be fun, what will happen is I will post up two different opinions/sides and you have to pick the one you want to support. You then debate in the comments and try and get other people on your favoured side. Convince people why your side is the best, give them reasons! Debugging Tori Redding by Jason Ancona

Tori Redding is not in a rush to grow up. Not at all, so she decides to start a club. The Not So Fast club, a club which dedicates its time to helping teenagers make the right choices. But before long Tori realises that everyone just thinks of them as snitches - determined to stop them having fun. Then when a trip to the dentist results in Tori having super memory she could not be more happy. Homework done quickly and the ability to memorise everybodys name in the school - helpful for giving out cards! When someone disappears Tori uses her special ability to figure out what happened but can she figure it out before her memory goes into overdrive?

Jason Ancona is a new name for me and he certainly gave a good first impression. I loved this novel! I found it a unique read - in a good way, different than your usual mystery novels. Some parts of the story refer to real life situations so it made the whole book seem real.

Tori Redding is a character full of attitude and I found it comical at her opinion of certain things. She is quite stubborn and sometimes that affects the people around her. Another quality that we see in her throughout the book is determination. She is determined to make her Not So Fast club successful (even though everyone in the school hates it) so when she discovers she has super memory she uses it at her advantage like giving out violation cards. Another character I feel I need to talk about is Alex. He is the only member of the NSF club (Tori and her best friend, Geo are co captains) and he has a little crush on Tori. It is quite sweet but Tori always manages to hurt his feelings (without meaning too). There was one thing that put me off him a little and that was his laugh. I know he is fictional but I honestly felt like I could hear his laugh and I hated it.

Ancona has the ability to mix real life situations in with a little fiction and I think that is a good quality in an author.

"Nancy Drew meets Men in Black" Bill Defelis.

I could not have summed that up better for you. This novel is a mixture of Nancy Drew and Men in Black no doubt! Crammed full of mystery with a splash of science fiction on top. Bill Defelis has certainly got a good imagination!

Characterisation is a very good factor in this book and one worth mentioning. Hazel is probably my favourite character. I really admire Hazel for her bravery, determination and loyalty to her friends and family. I also like Mrs Schnuffler. She is one of Hazel's neighbours and was very helpful when Hazel needed her. She has the reputation of the nasty, lonely woman that no one ever sees but when Hazel builds up the courage to talk to her she realizes that she is very kind hearted and brave. There is a lot of characters in this book though and sometimes I found myself asking who was who and what were they there for.

I love the fact that this novel was a mixture of genres. I don't want to give to much away though so I will not go into detail. I feel that it is a very good quality in a book when it has more than one type of genre because then it can entertain different types of audiences. I really think you should check this book out. If you are a fan of science fiction and mystery that might help.

Wow! Just wow! What a great book! I was not sure if I would find this book boring but it was filled with surprising twists. Loved it!

I looked up to Dante, the main character, the most. When he finds out he has a daughter, Emma he is stunned - and scared! He is only seventeen and at the start of the book does not know what to do with Emma. What should he do? I admire Dante for sticking by Emma, even though he is young and does not have a clue about how to be a father. But as he starts to bond with Emma he is rewarded with experiences he will never forget.

I think this book would go under family relationships because of how family love plays an important role in this novel. I do recommend this to older readers and I think you know why, but I really hope you will read this because it is a great read!

I want to mention how much I love the cover of this book. The casual boy clothes with the bottle and the dummy, great idea!

What a great and horrendous read! Filled to the brim with horrific events and mystery I did not put this book down! It was a light read but that did not affect how much I enjoyed it.

Expectantly, none of the three main characters disappointed me, but in this book unlike in the previous novels in the Dark Touch series I found Jess as one of my favourite characters. I am not sure why but I found her a brave, considerate character and she just shone through in this book. Oh and yes, Eve and Luke finally had moments and I can not wait to see what happens between them!

Surprisingly I have enjoyed all of these books and can not wait to get my hands on the next book coming out, Betrayal.

I am beginning to think that Amy Meredith has no flaws. I loved this book! Meredith has truly got me glued to her Dark Touch novels and I can not wait to read the next book in this gripping series. I really recommend that you read it.

The title, The Hunt should sort of give you an idea what this book will be about. Something is hunting humans. Something that Eve would rather not think about. But when people she knows are attacked Eve starts to unravel terrible secrets. Can she along with her best friend Jess and gorgeous new boy Luke stop all of this before it is too late?

If you have not already read the first novel in Meredith's novels I strongly advise that you do. If not then you probably will not know what I am talking about right now.

A really good quality in this book is that you get to know more about the characters. A character twist (that I was hoping was going to happen) was that Eve and Luke started to think about each other in a more than friendly way.

Luke is the new boy in the town and ever since he saw Eve's powers in the first novel it had brought them closer together, but in this novel you start to see a little spark between them. Unfortunetly this book left you on a cliffhanger between them so I will need to dive right into the next book to find out what happens.

This book is also a light read. I finished in a day!

I have never read a supernatural based book before so I did not know what to expect from this book. Whenever I used to go into a library or a book shop I did not ever think to look into the supernatural or horror section. I always seemed to avoid them because I did not think it was my type of thing but thanks to Amy Meredith it now is!
I enjoyed Shadows so much that it was not long before I had devoured the whole book. I read it over two days. The novel is so gripping and well written that I loved every minute of it - even the scary parts!
Fifteen year old Eve Evergold (what a great name) is the main character. She is brave, caring and considerate. She loves Jimmy Choos and fashionable purses and her best friend Jess. Eve is in her first year of high school when she discovers her supernatural powers, but when people around her start acting strangely Eve realises that she must use her new powers to defeat whoever is responsible for all of this. But this is proved difficult when she finds herself drawn to a handsome, mysterious stranger...
I absolutely love this cover! It is almost teasing how mysterious it is. It gives you a feeling of what this book will be about. Overall I give this book a 5/5 because I loved it, I hope if you read this book you will too!

Sweet, comical and sprinkled with Plaja magic, Swapped by a Kiss is a fun and girly read. Great storyline, think Freaky Friday but in black and white.

I love the characters in Swapped by a Kiss. My favourite characters are probably Jo and David. Jo because of how she manages to keep up the image of Rachel and David because he never really gives up on Rachel even though she can be a bit grumpy and snappy around him.

At some parts of this book I got a little bit confused when it came to Jo in Rachel and Rachel in Jo etc. I also felt like skipping to the end to see what happened but I don't think I would count that as a negative point, more like a good author that keeps you wanting more! I recommend this book to YA who like a good chick lit and I give it four stars! :)

Shadow by Michael Morpurgo

Shadow is a great read! Yes, it is a light read but I still found it enjoyable. The novel has three different points of view, one being Aman's and the others being Matt (Aman's best friend) and Matt's Grandfather. You are probably wondering why it's not only Aman's story but at the beginning of the book it starts out with Matt and his Granfather talking about what is happening with Aman. Aman is telling his story. If you read this book (which I hope you will) you will understand what I am talking about.

The main storyline is about a Springer Spaniel, Shadow, who helps Aman and his mother on their dangerous journey so she is my favourite character. Throughout the novel Shadow sticks by Aman through the times where he needs her most. I think Morpurgo used a Spinger Spaniel for Shadow because Spinger Spaniels are very affectionate, loyal and smart. You can't picture a labrador or a chihuahua playing Shadow, can you? Another quality that I like about Shadow is that she might not be big but she is brave.

I love the cover of Shadow, for one, the dog is so cute! It is also a great idea that you get to see the dangerous part of the novel in the background by showing army helicopters and fighters. The reaching out and holding hands shows how emotional this book is going to be as well.

I recommend this book to 11 year olds and older because it is quite a light read. That is if you are an enthusiastic reader. Animal lovers will probably like this novel too. The reason I haven't mentioned a genre is because I basically can't decide what group it goes under. Maybe adventure? Hmmm...

My expectations of this book were that it would be OK but I found I enjoy it better. It might look a bit younger than you usually read but why not read it? I have read quite a few of Michael Morpurgo's books and some of them even made it into my favourites, War Horse and Adolphus Tips certainly did! I think Morpurgo has a unique knack for writing so that is why I am recommended Shadow to you!

Matched by Ally Condie is a hard book to review because I really don't know how I feel about it. I think it is set in the future because it has a Society, air trains etc. It took me quite a lot of chapters until I got into the book but I still found it a bit boring. Towards the very end was when I finally got right into it and wouldn't take my eyes off of it for a second. In conclusion Matched by Allie Condie has recieved an OK from me.
On a more positive note, the characters' personalities are shown pretty well through some elements of the setting (e.g. When Cassia goes to her Matching Banquet she gets to choose a dress of a bright colour. She chooses a green dress which gives us the images of her being a light hearted, quiet girl). I have two favourite characters in this novel, the first one being Cassia. I like Cassia because of the bravery she shows in sticky situations and also how caring she is towards her friends by not hurting their feelings. The other character in my favour is Cassia's original Match, Xander. He has bright blue eyes, blonde hair and is quite handsome. He is one of Cassia's best friends (even though he is her Match) and is very generous, gentle, sneaky and loves playing games.
I would reccommend this to Young Adults but I am not sure what Young Adult group would like this. All I can say is give this a try and see if you like it, or not. This would be the right time to tell you that there is a sequel, Crossed which will be coming out this year. Maybe because this book is part of a trilogy I will enjoy Crossed even better.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

No. I remember loving to write when I was young and even winning some competitions but I lost confidence in my writing as I grew older. I entered University as an English and Journalism major but then graduated as a math and music major. For a while it was my dream to compose music for Disney. Then one day I decided I wanted to do something about how few black women there were in the books that I liked so I picked up a pen and started writing them in. Since then I’ve written 10 novels each with a black female somewhere in the book.

What is your favourite type of genre (the genre you use with your books)?

Yes, I love YA books. There’s something hopeful and nostalgic about them for me. Maybe it’s because I can always find something to relate to. Of course, there are some adult books that I love and adult authors are usually the ones that make my favorite list, but when I’m looking to relax or be entertained, I always go for the YA section.

Who is your favourite character in Priscilla The Great?

That’s a hard question. I love all my characters! Of course I love Priscilla because she’s just sassy and fun. But then again I like Tai because she reminds me of myself. I was the book smart nerd growing up. But then again I love the twins because they’re just plain hilarious.

What do you hope readers will obtain from your book

Just a good time. It’s a fun read and I hope people laugh.

Do you hope to bring out more books, if so can you give us an idea what it will be about?

I’ve already written four of the five Priscilla the Great books. I also have ideas for spin off series for Tai and the twins.

Who are you favourite authors?

V.C. Andrews, Jane Austen, Michael Crichton, Gwendolyn Brooks, Tom Wolfe, Mark Haddon, Alice Walker.

Did a certain author inspire you to become one yourself?
Hmm, tough one. If anyone, I would have to say V.C. Andrews because I was reading a lot of her during my formative years. That was about the time when I first wondered why all of her characters were white. There were never any beautiful black women in her books. My very first story was a V.C. Andrews type story about a black girl and a white boy who fall in love. It is now a full length novel called Ain’t No Sunshine, written under my pen name Leslie DuBois.

I have to admit, when I heard of this book I had mixed feelings. Was I going to like i t or not, but I loved it. The characters, theme and genre gripped me in the very first chapter. It was almost like Priscilla had invited me into her family and her life.

An element I enjoyed about the book was the way the author thread in normal seventh grade problems that girls would go through (like boys, spots etc) while at the same time still obtaining the problems Priscilla had with her powers.

I also enjoyed the way that in the first couple of chapters you started gettting hints that she wasn't completely normal (and that her family weren't either).
My favourite character is Priscilla because of how brave she is. I also like her because of how opininated she can sometimes be. Another character I also like is her best friend, Tai. She is very smart and helps Priscilla alot through the book.

I know this book is different from all the other ones I review but hopefully you'll enjoy this little change! I really enjoyed this book. I hadn't read a Chris Higgins novel before but after reading this book I'd love to read another one. My favourite character is Flick, the main character because of her personality. If you read this book then you'll understand that her personality shines through in some chapters. Higgin's has cleverly changed a usual teen chick lit by threading some family mystery into the plot.
